Join us on an exciting tour to Chiatura, an industrial town with a rich history dating back to the Soviet period. Our friendly guide will meet you at your hotel or place of residence in Tbilisi in the morning and take you on a journey through real Georgia's stunning natural beauty and Soviet-era heritage.
First, we'll visit the Katskhi pillar, a 40-meter-high limestone monolith that towers over the Karshuna River gorge. Atop the pillar sits a monastery and an 8th-century church, likely built by the Stylite. The monastery was home to only one inhabitant, monk Maxime, who has lived in solitude and silence for years.
Next, we'll travel to Chiatura, an industrial town known for its manganese mining during the Soviet Union. Today, visitors come to Chiatura to see remnants of the town's communist past and see the communist-era cable cars that are still in use by locals as a means of transportation. The cable car system consists of 12 passenger lines and a few cargo lines, all totalling over 6,000 meters in length.
Nestled between steep valleys and deep gorges, Chiatura will leave a lasting impression on anyone who visits this off-the-beaten-path Georgian destination. At the end of the day, we'll return to Tbilisi and drop you off at your hotel or place of residence. Don't miss this opportunity to discover the urbex history and culture of Chiatura with us!
